Scope
The standard applies to the classification of buildings in four sound classes. Class A has the limit values that give the best sound conditions and class D the worst. The standard sets limit values for sound classes in the form of  airborne sound insulation;  step sound insulation;  sound level (nois level);  room acoustic parameters (reverberation time, reverberation time related to room height, average sound absorption factor, speech transmis ion index, etc.). The limit values in this standard are given for residences, construction works for the public and work buildings, and deal in particular with schools and other buildings for teaching, kindergartens and after-school arrangements (AKS/SFO), hospitals and care institutions, accommodation, offices. For each building type or each user area, the limit values are divided into four sound classes according to the expected use of and requirements for the building for normally furnis ed rooms. All the various criteria for sound conditions specified for a class must be met for a building or parts of a building to be classified in a sound class. Guidelines for assessing compliance are set out in Appendix B (informative). In order to ensure equal use for all (universal design), in addition to room and building acoustic criteria and limit values for sound and nois conditions, requirements for the use of sound transmis ion equipment (telephone loop, loudspeaker system and other) or other technical aids are specified where necessary for this cf. building technical regulations [18, 19, 20]. In addition to technical aids, the vis ally impaired use the sound-reflective properties of buildings to orientate themselves. The standard can be used to classify buildings or parts of buildings according to the sound conditions in the building or to set requirements for sound conditions for all or parts of buildings. It enables manufacturers to declare sound classes for buildings, and provides instructions for meeting sound requirements according to building regulations. The standard also provides the opportunity to set standardized differentiated limit values for sound conditions in buildings. The classes in the standard are linked to measurement methods in accordance with the Norwegian Standard, as stated in points 2, 3 and 4. The limit values for the sound classes apply to on-site measurements. The specified classes for sound level apply to both indoor sound level (from technical installations and outdoor sound sources) and sound level in outdoor areas/outdoor recreation areas (from technical installations or other outdoor sound sources). For classes A and B for dwellings, limit values for sound level also apply to the use of other technical equipment and installations (which are not fixed building technical installations) in the same unit of use or user area.
