- This document specifies the service conditions, ratings, design and structure, test, transportation, storage, installation, operation and maintenance rules, safety and environmental aspects of voltage equalizing capacitors for high-voltage AC circuit breakers. This document applies to grading capacitors connected in parallel with the breaker openings. Its function is to improve the voltage distribution across each interrupter unit of the multi-break circuit breaker. Equalizing capacitors can also be used in parallel with interrupter units on single-break circuit breakers to suppress transient recovery voltage (TRV). The equalizing capacitor is a component of the circuit breaker and should meet the technical requirements of the circuit breaker. This document applies to one or two types of grading capacitors that meet the following categories: --- Installed on air-insulated circuit breakers; --- Installed on enclosed circuit breakers. The tests for the above different types of grading capacitors are in some cases different. The purpose of this document is to: --- provide uniform rules for performance, testing and ratings; --- specify specific safety rules; --- provide installation and operation guidelines. This document does not apply to phase-to-earth capacitors installed on circuit breakers to suppress transient recovery voltage.
