Scope
The design of containment vessels to safely withstand detonation-induced pressure loading is an extremely complex process that has been the focus of research and development by Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) for over 30 years. Driven by LANL desire for industry-wide design standards and guidelines and requests by cognizant safety review boards@ the LANL research and development related to the design of containment vessels for detonation-induced pressure loading were re-examined by LANL and summarized in three technical reports. These three reports culminated the technical information that focus on three important aspects of the design process: 1) definition of the detonation-induced dynamic loading and vessel response with particular emphasis on spherical vessels; 2) definition of design criteria appropriate for ductile failure modes of detonation-induced containment vessels; 3) definition of design criteria for potential non-ductile failure modes and fatigue damage of detonation-induced containment vessels. This two-part WRC Bulletin covers: The detonation-induced dynamic pressure loading in containment vessels including structural dynamic loading concepts@ influence of asymmetric blast loading@ explosion phenomena@ vibration modes of spherical shells and containment vessels and a summary of loads considered and Ductile failure criteria for detonation-induced pressure loading in containment vessels including high-energy detonation pressure loading@ multiple-use methodology@ single-use methodology and a summary of criteria presented. A subsequent WRC Bulletin will be issued on the general topic of safe design of containment vessels subjected to detonation-induced pressure loading covers the fracture-safe and fatigue design aspects of the general topic
