Scope: This standard specifies a method for the determination of dichloromethane-soluble substances in skin. This method is applicable to all types of skin. Not all fatty and similar substances can be extracted from the skin with organic solvents; they may be partly soluble and partly bound to the skin. On the other hand, the solvent can dissolve non-fatty substances, such as sulfur and impregnations, which make it difficult to determine the acid number and saponification number of a fat. This standard includes two methods for extracting fatty substances: 1) extraction using a Soxhlet apparatus; and 2) extraction using a pressure extraction system. Since extraction is often carried out in conjunction with the determination of free fatty acids in the skin, an appropriate procedure for determining the free fatty acids extracted by this method is included. The apparatus and procedures established by this method are also suitable for extraction with solvents other than dichloromethane (although temperature conditions may need to be changed for high pressure extraction)
