Scope
1.1 Application This Standard applies to a) complete vent (flue) -connected or direct-vent connected, oil-fired steam, and hot-water boilers that are provided with automatic control devices; b) oil-fired steam and hot-water condensing boilers; c) boilers having an input of less than 117.2 kW (400 000 Btu/h); d) low-pressure boilers (as defined in Clause 3) having an input of 117.2 kW (400 000 Btu/h) or more; e) high-pressure boilers (as defined in Clause 3), regardless of input; f) boilers, factory- or field-assembled, that have been, or could have been, completely assembled at the manufacturer’s plant and transported in the assembled condition; g) boilers intended for heating swimming pool water (see Clause 4.6); and h) oil-fired boilers that i) include gas-fired pilots and have an input of 117.2 kW (400 000 Btu/h) or more; or ii) are capable of burning additional fuels. 1.2 Exception This Standard does not cover the devices required on the gas train of the boilers described in Clause 1.1h), or other devices required for additional fuels. 1.3 Non-compliance An appliance that differs from those specified by this Standard may be examined and tested according to the intent of this Standard. However, an appliance that otherwise complies with the requirements of this Standard will not be deemed as complying with this Standard if it has other features or a combination of features that, when examined and tested, are found to impair its fulfillment of the requirements. 1.4 Terminology In this Standard, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application. 1.5 Units of measurement The values given in SI units are the units of record for the purposes of this Standard. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only.
