Scope

Scope 1.1 This standard addresses issues to consider in order to adapt wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to a changing climate by reviewing aspects of climate, regulations, risks, design, construction, as well as operation and maintenance. It applies to existing projects, new projects or projects to be upgraded/improved. 1.2 This standard provides a user-friendly framework and tool for designers, engineers and managers, which proves useful during the design, construction or operation/maintenance of WWTPs. Note: Its intention is to provide guidance on applying the tool to other infrastructure projects and assessing climate change risks, ranking and prioritizing measures to increase resilience and/or redundancy and develop intervention plans, without excessive over-design. 1.3 This standard provides guidance on climate change data sources and how to use them when identifying impacts on components of a WWTP. 1.4 This standard highlights climate change adaptation measures to increase resilience and respond to high-risk scenarios related to WWTPs. 1.5 This standard applies to the STEU itself as well as its processes and its property. It does not apply to the collection systems that supply the station or to waste tanks. 1.6 In this standard, the term “shall” indicates a requirement, that is, a requirement that the user must comply with to ensure compliance with the standard; “should” indicates a recommendation or what is advisable but not obligatory to do; and “may” indicates a possibility or what is permitted to be done. The notes that accompany the articles do not include prescriptions or recommendations. They are used to separate from the text explanations or information that are not properly part of the standard. Notes at the bottom of figures and tables are part of these and can be written as prescriptions. The annexes are qualified as normative (mandatory) or informative (optional) to clarify their application.
