INTRODUCTION: This study@ conducted for the American Petroleum Institute@ was designed to evaluate the toxicity of methyl t-butyl ether (MTBE) when administered to rats by inhalation for nine days at target concentrations of 100@ 300@ 1000@ and 3000 parts per million (ppm). Urine@ hematology and clinical chemistry evaluations were performed on 10 male and 10 female rats for quality control assessment prior to exposure initation and on all surviving rats upon exposure termination. Gross necropsy examinations were performed on all animals and tissues were saved. Histopathology was performed on all rats in Groups I@ IV@ and V and the animals for quality control assessment. All testing and evaluations were performed at Bio/dynamics@ Inc.@ Mettlers Road@ East Millstone@ New Jersey@ 08873.
