This standard specifies the format for transferring Scanning Probe Microscope (SPM) data from computer to computer via a parallel or serial interface via cable, local area network, wide area network or other communication lines. The transmitted data is encoded in characters that appear on an ordinary computer monitor or printer. The format is designed for data from SPMs such as scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and related surface analysis methods that use a sharp probe that is scanned across the sample surface. This format covers data obtained from single-channel imaging, multi-channel imaging and single-point spectroscopy, and can be extended to 2D spectral imaging in future versions.
