This document specifies the general basis for the application of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) to solid and liquid substances. The measurements are usually referred to using the term "thermogravimetric analysis" (TG). Thermogravimetric analysis is used to study temperature- or time-dependent physical processes and chemical reactions that are accompanied by a mass change. Simultaneous methods allow the simultaneous measurement of other characteristic parameters as a function of temperature or time. NOTE 1 For example, in a thermogravimetric analysis-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) measurement, the mass change and the enthalpy change are determined simultaneously. Other simultaneous methods are given in Annex A. Coupled TG methods allow the measurement of other characteristic parameters by analyzing the exhaust gas flow. NOTE 2 For example, in exhaust gas analysis (EGA), the exhaust gas flow is studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR), gas chromatography (TG-GC) or mass spectrometry (TG-MS). The thermomagnetic TG method allows the measurement of the change in the force to which a ferromagnetic sample is subjected in a constant magnetic or electric field as a function of temperature (determination of the Curie temperature). The vapor pressure can be determined by thermogravimetric analysis, for example by diffusion methods. Adsorption behavior can also be studied by thermogravimetric analysis. Further information can be obtained by carrying out measurements in different atmospheres or pressures. NOTE 3 Thermogravimetric analysis determines the weight of a sample and/or the change in the weight of the sample. Usually, in thermogravimetric measurements, the determination of the mass or the change in mass is discussed. For more information, see DIN 1305.
