"PURPOSE AND METHODOLOGY From June through September 1973@ a comprehensive literature review of eye irritation and lachrymation in relation to air pollution was conducted by Copley International Corporation under the sponsorship of the Coordinating Research Council@ Inc. The purpose of this investigation was to describe the existing state-of- knowledge and to identify areas where further inquiry should be directed to achieve a more complete understanding of the problem. The methodology adopted was fairly typical of that used by researchers for similar purposes. As a starting point@ the Environmental Protection Agency@ Air Pollution Technical Information Center was asked to perform a search of abstracts in their files under the available topics of ""eyes"" and ""lachrymation."" A total of 358 were obtained in this manner. Although the abstracts themselves could not be used to provide an adequate description of the state-of-knowledge@ they were helpful in suggesting key publications to be reviewed in depth by the research staff. The abstracts were also helpful in estimating the volume of work done pertinent to this review each year since 1936. One particularly interesting trend was found. viz.@ that the number of studies reported by researchers in the United States declined sharply since 1967@ while increasing numbers of studies published by researchers in Japan and the Soviet Union virtually offset this decline. It is noted that other referral services were considered besides that operated by the Environmental Protection Agency@ Most could have provided only a listing of authors and publications. None was believed to be as complete in its coverage as the Air Pollution Technical Information Center."
