"PREFACE This report is a companion to Volume I@ published in August 1970. Volume I reviewed the information currently available on important air pollutants@ the source and location of major pollutants@ and explained the theoretical and practical reasons for selecting the crops and counties to be covered in Volume II. The present report includes estimated losses due to ozone@ PAN@ and oxides of nitrogen for sixty-eight crops that are sensitive to those air pollutants. The information is presented for 525 counties in which the level of air pollution from those pollutants was considered to be high enough to cause significant crop losses. Prices@ quantities@ and values of the crops are also included@ except that for most vegetable@ nursery@ and forest products only the total values of the crops were tabulated. The dollar loss for each crop was calculated by using the total value of the crop in each county@ and the percentage of the crop value that SRI estimated was lost due to air pollution. Estimates of the percentage loss of each crop in each county were made by Harris M. Benedict. The procedure in setting up a ""time-sharing"" computer program to organize the data@ calculate losses@ and print out the results for each county was established by Robert E. Olson. Alex Cole@ Raymond Borton@ Elizabeth Hall@ and Clarence J. Miller assisted in carrying through successive stages of the project. Walter Wiebenson modified the basic program to adapt it for batch processing and high-speed print out."
