Scope
This standard establishes the most common standard approaches for performing screening and quantitation of essential heavy metals during the preparation of raw materials, as well as after receipt of finished products. It covers a wide range of methods, from traditional, colorimetric reactions that can be carried out without the use of expensive equipment, to the most high-tech, such as inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), which allows the detection of substances, levels the content of which is expressed in micrograms per kilogram. This standard discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each of these analytical methods, allowing the user to select the most appropriate approach. This standard is not intended to establish or recommend maximum permissible concentrations of heavy metals in raw materials or finished products. These values should be set by the relevant regulatory authorities
