Scope
This information sheet contains practical advice for the indexer who has to analyze documents and select appropriate subject words for the subjects covered by the documents. It limits itself to these initial steps in the indexing and does not leave to describe the practice in individual institutions, cf. the bibliography (section 8). 2 The techniques described in this information sheet can be used wherever indexers analyze the subjects of documents and describe the subjects with subject words. They cannot be used in connection with automatic indexing techniques, where terms occurring in the texts are arranged in sets or classes based on criteria that can be processed by a computer, e.g. frequency and/or proximity in the text, although the purpose of such systems are the same. 3 This information sheet is primarily intended as a guide for indexers in document analysis and subject naming. It can also be useful when analyzing users' search questions and their formulation and adaptation to the search system's requirements, and it can act as guidance for abstract preparers. However, it must be remembered that although these tasks are analogous, they are not identical. 4 The purpose of this information sheet is to promote uniform practice within, for example: a) an indexing institution or an indexing network; b) between indexing institutions, in particular where they exchange bibliographic records.
