Scope
Publication of these reports- WRC Bulletin No. 364 was sponsored by the Committee on Shells and Ligaments of the Pressure Vessel Research Council. New design curves are proposed for torispherical pressure vessel heads in the intermediate thickness range. The new curves are based on theoretically calculated elastic-plastic collapse pressures for a vessel geometry that does not include a skirt. If the new curves are used@ a skirt is optional but not mandatory. The minimum required thickness of the head is found from the new curves. The minimum required thickness of the shell@ to which the head is attached@ is found from the usual formulas given in the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. No skirt need be inserted between the head and the shell. This is different from the present design curves in Section VIII@ Division 2@ of the ASME Code that require a skirt@ as thick as the head. It is recommended that the new design curves be also used for Section VIII@ Division 1. This report describes calculations and presents results for the proposed new design curves. It also gives a historical account of the design rules for torispherical heads in the ASME Code.
