Scope
SCOPE AND FIELD OF APPLICATION This publication presents a brief background report on the development of the International System (SI) and its legal status inside and outside the United States. It explains the purpose and the use of tables developed specifically to facilitate petroleum industry data manipulation. These tables show the officially recommended SI units of weights and measures along with factors for converting to SI from corresponding customary units. Three customary systems were included??the foot-pound-second@ the centimeter-gram-second (cgs)@ and the meter-kilogram-second (mks) system. The purpose of this publication is threefold: ??To supplement the user's basic knowledge of the SI system with information especially tailored to fit the operating needs of the petroleum industry; ??To alert users to the fact that the American Petroleum Institute and its member companies envision having to do an ever-increasing proportion of their business in the SI system in the years ahead; ??To encourage commonality of SI nomenclature and to facilitate conversions of industry standards and data by providing simplified tables for this purpose.
