- This document defines the terms related to cell counting in the field of biotechnology, describes the count of cells in suspension (usually cell concentration) and the count of cells adhered to the substrate (usually cell area density), provides cell counting methods (including total and differential counting, direct counting and indirect counting), together with key considerations for the choice of method and measurement process, specify the requirements for data processing, analysis and reporting. This document is applicable to the enumeration of all cell types, including mammalian and non-mammalian (e.g. bacteria, yeast) cell counts. This document is not intended for cell counting in tissue sections or biomaterial matrices. There are international and national standards related to cell counting in different fields/specific application scenarios. If applicable, users can refer to existing standards within their scope (specific measurement techniques and/or application scenarios) when operating.
