Scope

Scope 1.1 Subject to clause 1.2, Part 1 of this standard applies to all boilers, all pressure vessels, all pressure pipes and accessories regulated by law (and defined in Article 3) and indicated in the first part of this standard. Notes: 1) Provincial and territorial laws or regulations may stipulate sizing limits different from those stated in Part I of this standard. The relevant regulatory authority should therefore be consulted. 2) The pressures indicated in the first part of this standard are gauge pressures greater than atmospheric pressure. 3) This standard applies to boilers, pressure vessels, pressure piping and accessories installed after its adoption. 1.2 The requirements relating to cylinders and pressure piping at compressed natural gas supply stations are the subject of parts two and three of this standard. 1.3 This standard does not apply to: a) pressure components used in elevators and hydraulic goods lifts; (b) pressure containment devices for switchgear and control equipment; nor (c) pressure vessels intended for the transport of dangerous goods regulated by Transport Canada. 1.4 In the event of a discrepancy between a clause in part one of this standard and the codes or standards referenced in part one of this standard, part one of this standard takes precedence. 1.5 In this CSA standard, the term “shall” indicates a requirement, that is, a prescription that the user must follow to ensure compliance with the standard; “should” indicates a recommendation or what is advisable but not obligatory to do; and “may” indicates a possibility or what is permitted to be done. The notes that accompany the articles do not include prescriptions or recommendations. They are used to separate from the text explanations or information that are not properly part of the standard. Notes at the bottom of figures and tables are part of these and can be written as prescriptions. The annexes are qualified as normative (mandatory) or informative (optional) to clarify their application. 1.6 Values shown in SI units are the official values in this standard. Values in parentheses are given for information and comparison purposes only. Nominal pipe dimensions are expressed dimensionlessly.
