Scope
"INTRODUCTION Although a number of studies have been conducted on the effect of motor-fuel composition on aerosol formation@ the data reported do not lead to clear-cut conclusions. In recognition of the need for clarifying this relationship@ the American Petroleum Institute sponsored the study reported here. Because of the complexity of aerosol formation and its relation to atmospheric visibility@ this study was designed as an exploratory investigation to serve as a basis for planning a more comprehensive study. To accomplish the objectives of this exploratory program@ a literature survey was first conducted@ followed by an experimental program in which the aerosol formation tendencies of pure hydrocarbons and exhaust from full-boiling motor gasolines were evaluated. This report summarizes the results of a 2-year study initiated at Battelle's Columbus Laboratories in March@ 1969. It is the intent of this summary to bring forth the principal observations@ conclusions@ and pertinent although not fully explainable relationships between fuel composition and aerosol formation. Detailed reports on the three major topics are available from the American Petroleum Institute.(1-3)* These reports are entitled as follows: ""A Literature Survey on Aerosol Formation and Visibility Reduction in Photochemical Smog"" ""A Study of Motor Fuel Composition Effects' on Aerosol Formation. Part II. Aerosol Reactivity Study of Hydrocarbons"" ""A Study of Motor Fuel Composition Effects on Aerosol Formation. Part Ill.Visibility Reduction from Automobile Exhaust"". The API is continuing to sponsor studies on the effect of fuel composition on aerosol formation. * References are given on page 27."
