Supercapacitor Classification Rules Analysis

Based on the stored energy and dangerous goods properties, supercapacitors can be divided into the following categories:

  • Double-layer supercapacitors not installed in equipment: stored energy greater than 0.3Wh and not greater than 10Wh.
  • Asymmetric supercapacitors not installed in equipment: stored energy greater than 20Wh or meet the definition of specific dangerous goods.
  • Capacitors installed in equipment: ensure that the packaging strength is sufficient to prevent accidental operation during transportation.

Classification requirements:

  • When the double-layer supercapacitor stores energy exceeding 10Wh, a pressure difference test and a drop test are required.
  • When the asymmetric supercapacitor stores energy exceeding 20Wh, a pressure difference test and a drop test are also required.

Test methods and test requirements

Test environment conditions:

  • Temperature: 20°C ±5°C
  • Relative humidity: 25%~75%
  • Atmospheric pressure: 86 kPa~106 kPa

Test instruments and equipment:

  • Voltage measurement: ±1%
  • Current measurement: ±1%
  • Temperature control: ±2°C
  • Time measurement: ±0.1%
  • Mass measurement: ±0.05%

Pressure difference test:

  • The sample is stored under a pressure difference of at least 95 kPa for 6 hours, and the result is observed for 1 hour.

Drop test:

  • The sample falls freely from a height of 1.2 meters onto a hard surface, once in each of the six directions.

Implementation recommendations

To ensure the safe transportation of supercapacitors, the following measures are recommended:

  • Classify and test strictly in accordance with the standards to avoid misjudgment.
  • For capacitors containing dangerous goods, packaging materials that meet the requirements must be selected.
  • Regularly check the effectiveness of protective measures and pressure relief designs.

Conclusion:

GB/T 43545-2023 standard provides comprehensive guidance for the safe transportation of supercapacitors, and specifies specific requirements from classification to testing. Compliance with this standard can effectively reduce transportation risks and ensure the safety of dangerous goods.
