This standard specifies a method for determining the total metal content of leather by ashing (decomposition) of the leather followed by determination using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) or atomic fluorescence spectrometry (SFA). The method of this standard allows the determination of the total metal content of leather; its use is not limited to specific types of metal compounds or their oxidation state. The results of the interlaboratory study and the limits of quantitation possible using ICP-OES are given in Table A.1 and Table A.2 (Appendix A).
