Scope
Foreword: This FIRST-AID TRAINING GUIDE was prepared by the Committee on First Aid of the American Petroleum Institute's Central Committee on Accident Prevention. It has been approved by the Central Committee on Accident Prevention@ as well as by the Institute's Medical Advisory Committee. Its purpose is to provide the fundamentals of training in the 6 basic emergency measures@ viz.: 1@ artificial respiration; 2@ control of bleeding; 3. treatment for shock; 4@ care of open wounds and burns: 5. care of dislocations and fractures; and@ 6@ transportation of the injured. In many instances large quantities of standard first-aid materials will not be available in an emergency. As a result@ bandages and splints will have to be improvised. Therefore@ this course is designed to provide training largely in functional first aid. For example@ with respect to splinting@ no attempt is made to specify the exact number of cravat bandages to be used. Of major importance is that the patient be treated for shock@ the injured part immobilized@ and medical care obtained. No attempt has been made to discuss the six basic emergencies in the order of their importance. The order selected is for ease of teaching and for apportionment of lesson time. The program of training outlined herein is designed to extend over a period of not less than eight hours.
