- Scope
- Scope 1.1 This standard sets out the requirements for insulating tubes which are generally circular in cross-section and made solely of extruded blends composed of thermosetting, elastomeric or thermoplastic polymers (see materials and their characteristics in Table 1). It also covers heat-shrinkable and cross-linked polymer tubes. 1.2 These tubes are designed for use only in air, in dry or damp locations, for internal wiring of electrical devices or appliances, in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (CEC, Part I) and the National Electrical Code (NEC), ANSI/NFPA 70. They can be used to insulate poorly insulated conductors, bus bars, motor wires, transformer wires, strips and small electronic component assemblies. These tubes are not intended for use in contact with sharp edges or protrusions or sharp corners, or to be subjected to repeated traction, compression or bending. The tubes are not intended for use where it is possible to use a common insulated conductor (appliance wiring equipment) designed specifically for this purpose. 1.3 These requirements do not apply to fabric tubes, chemically expanded tubes, extruded polymer reinforced tubes or tubes providing only mechanical protection. 1.4 A tube is acceptable in a given device or appliance if it is acceptable for continuous use under the service conditions. Thus, for a particular use, it will be necessary in certain cases to use a tube with characteristics different from those indicated in these requirements, or characteristics additional to these. For example, the tube may require a thicker wall, a flat rather than circular section, inherent resistance to immersion in water, oil, a solvent or other liquid (or its vapor); it may also be necessary to use an environment favorable to the development of mold or other similar organisms.
