Scope
Scope 1.1 This standard specifies methods for determining the uniform energy coefficient of electric storage water heaters and heat pump water heaters. 1.2 This standard: a) sets the minimum energy efficiency values for electric storage water heaters and heat pump water heaters; and (b) includes advanced test methods for cold climate ratings (see Annex B). 1.3 This standard applies: a) to electric storage water heaters: i) with a volume of 7.6 to 454 L (2 to 120 US gal); (ii) whose electric heating elements have an absorbed heating power of 12 kW or less; and (iii) designed to heat and maintain water by thermostatic control at a temperature equal to or less than 82°C (180°F); and b) heat pump water heaters: i) with a maximum rated current of = 24 A (taking into account the compressor and all auxiliary equipment such as fans, pumps, controls, and any resistant element being on the same circuit); (ii) with a maximum nominal power of = 15 kW; (iii) a maximum single-phase voltage of 250 V or less; and (iv) whose volume is 7.6 to 454 L (2 to 12 US gal); v) whose tank has a nominal volume of 454 L or less (= 120 US gal or less). 1.4 This standard does not apply to high temperature water heaters. 1.5 The tests described in this standard are not intended to determine actual in-service performance, but rather to serve as a standardized method for comparative purposes. 1.6 In this standard, the term “shall” indicates a requirement, that is, a requirement that the user must comply with to ensure compliance with the standard; “should” indicates a recommendation or what is advisable but not obligatory to do; and “may” indicates a possibility or what is permitted to be done. The notes that accompany the articles do not include prescriptions or recommendations. They are used to separate from the text explanations or information that are not properly part of the standard. Notes at the bottom of figures and tables are part of these and can be written as prescriptions. The annexes are qualified as normative (mandatory) or informative (optional) to clarify their application. 1.7 Values shown in SI units are the official values in this standard. Values in parentheses are given for information and comparison purposes only.
