Scope
This standard specifies methods for estimating probability distribution parameters for uniaxial strength data of fine ceramics characterized by brittle failure. NOTE: The failure strength of fine ceramics is treated as a continuous random variable. Typically, samples of fixed geometry fail under loading, the load at failure is recorded, and the resulting failure stresses are used to estimate parameters related to the population distribution. This standard applies to the two-parameter Weibull distribution based on the failure intensity. In addition, this standard limits the test sample (tension, bending, loading ring, etc.) is subject to uniaxial stress. 6.4 and 6.5 outline methods for correcting for bias in Weibull parameter estimates and computing confidence intervals for these estimates from a data set in which all fractures originate from a single defect population (ie, a single failure mode). For samples where fractures originate from multiple independent defect populations (eg, competing failure modes), the bias correction and confidence interval calculation methods in 6.4 and 6.5 are not applicable.
