Methods are provided to deal with the combination of sound pressure levels in decibels. Firstly@ for the case when several sources are acting together a method of addition is given to estimate the combined sound pressure level in dB from all the sources. Secondly@ for the measurement of sound pressure level from the sound source acting in the presence of background noise@ subtraction of the levels is used to provide a corrected sound pressure level for the considered sound source.
