Scope 1.1 General This standard establishes requirements for the design, manufacture, construction, modification, operation, verification, testing and maintenance of ski lifts and conveyors. Requirements for unusual or abnormal conditions are not specifically stated, nor are all engineering and construction details. It is understood that any work carried out within the scope of this standard complies at least with the safety rules formulated or suggested therein. This standard does not address all aspects of safety regarding ski lifts and conveyors. It is the user's responsibility to establish adequate security practices and to determine the applicability of any limitations or regulatory requirements. 1.2 Equipment covered In this standard, ski lifts and conveyors include: a) reversible cable cars with single or double carrying cables; (b) single-cable, double-cable and tri-cable aerial ski lifts with detachable and fixed attachments, including gondolas, chairlifts and other similar devices; (c) surface ski lifts, including crossbows, ski lifts and harnesses, and other similar devices; (d) snow yarns, including metallic and textile snow yarns; e) lifts with towed secondary vehicles; and f) devices with a flexible movable element that: i) transport people upward for recreational or sporting activities; or (ii) serve as boarding conveyors. 1.3 Goods Goods may be transported by equipment covered by this standard if provision has been made during the design and if all relevant safety measures are taken. 1.4 Funiculars This standard can be adopted for funiculars and self-propelled cable cars. 1.5 Terminology In this standard, the term “shall” indicates a requirement, that is to say a prescription that the user must respect to ensure compliance with the standard; “should” indicates a recommendation or what is advisable but not obligatory to do; and “may” indicates a possibility or what is permitted to be done. The notes that accompany the articles do not include prescriptions or recommendations. They are used to separate from the text explanations or information that are not properly part of the standard. Notes at the bottom of figures and tables are part of these and can be written as prescriptions. The annexes are qualified as normative (mandatory) or informative (optional) to clarify their application.
