Foreword The operation of merchant vessels in low temperature environments presents many challenges for designers@ builders@ Owners@ and Operators. These challenges include both hardware issues related directly to the construction@ outfitting@ and operation of vessels@ as well as those issues pertaining to the ability of the crew to function in a difficult environment. To assist the marine industry@ ABS issued the Guide for Vessels Operating in Low Temperature Environments in September 2006. Included in this revised Guide are the ABS criteria that are intended to assist in the design@ operation@ and maintenance of vessels when operating in the following environmental conditions: i) Continuous operation in ice ? Operation as an ice breaker ? Operation with an ice breaker escort ii) Occasional operation in ice iii) Operation in low temperatures in the absence of ice ? Continuous operation ? Occasional operation This Guide also specifies the ABS requirements and criteria for obtaining the optional notations Cold Climate Operation (CCO(TDST@ TMAT))@ Cold Climate Operation-Polar (CCO-POLAR(TDST@ TMAT))@ Cold Climate Operation Plus (CCO(TDST@ TMAT)+)@ Cold Climate Operation-Polar Plus (CCO-POLAR(TDST@ TMAT)+)@ and DE-ICE. The CCO notation identifies the foundation level of compliance with the prescriptive criteria contained in this Guide related to the design@ construction@ operation and survey of the vessel. For the CCOPOLAR notation@ the Guide invokes standards for vessels that intend to operate in Polar Regions on a continuous basis. DE-ICE is a notation available for vessels occasionally operating in low temperatures subject to ice accretion. The appended Plus (+) notation indicates the placement of additional equipment onboard for the crew and recognizes specific low temperature training for the crew. The Guide has been revised and reformatted taking into consideration ABS' continued research and comments received from industry. The Guide also contains a series of Appendices that provide supporting information relative to the requirements in Sections 2 through 9. Additional Appendices cover: ? Climatic Conditions ? Notes on Vessel Operations ? Other Reference Sources ? A List of Administration Contacts associated with navigation in Baltic@ Arctic@ and Antarctic areas ? A List of Meteorological Organization Contacts This Guide becomes effective immediately upon publication. We welcome your feedback.
