- SCOPE AND FIELD OF APPLICATION This SAE standard defines the most commonly used terms for pistons. These terms designate either types of pistons or certain characteristics and phenomena of pistons. The terms and definitions apply to pistons for reciprocating internal combustion engines and compressors working under analogous conditions.
