Scope
INTRODUCTION In 1967 the American Petroleum Institute initiated a 3-year study of the interaction of SO2 with photochemical smog. Results from this study indicated that there is an interaction between S02 and photo-chemical smog.(12 3 4 5)* This interaction was shown to be quite complex and to depend on the type of hydrocarbon@ the concentration of water vapor@ and the HC/NO ratio. In view of the complexity of the interactions and recognizing that the study had been limited at this point to the controls provided in laboratory environmental chambers@ it was of interest to ask how the SO2 interactions behaved in real@ urban air situations. To provide a basis for an eventual answer to this question@ a pilot field study was conducted in New York City using urban air. The only major controls in this study were the level of SO2 added to the air and the conduct of the smog reaction in a batch-process environmental chamber. * References on page 27.
