Scope
Scope 1.1 General This standard specifies requirements for piping for medical gases, medical suction, medical support gases and anesthesia gas evacuation systems in public and private health care establishments . It applies to all establishments that provide health care services, regardless of the type, size, location or range of services offered by these establishments, including, but not limited to: a) hospitals acute care; (b) extended care inpatient hospitals; (c) long-term care facilities; (d) community providers; (e) rented premises in office buildings; and f) outpatient and ambulatory care clinics (e.g., day surgery, endoscopy clinics, dentists' offices and medical offices). 1.2 Intended use There is a comment on this article. This standard is intended for anyone involved in the design, installation, commissioning, testing, documentation, operation and maintenance of pipelines for medical gases, suction medical support gases and anesthesia gas evacuation systems. The requirements are for: a) the design of systems with the aim of ensuring the continuity of gas supply or suction under the normal condition or under a single fault condition; b) the choice of materials and components; c) the non-interchangeability of equipment between the various gas networks and services; d) the cleanliness of materials and components, as well as the installed network; e) installation procedures for power plants and pipelines; f) configuration of network components; (g) control systems, monitoring and warning devices; h) markings and information to be provided by the manufacturer or installer; i) pipeline contamination testing; (j) final testing of each medical gas line before its use for patient care to ensure that it contains only the gas intended; and k) regular maintenance and checks. 1.3 Application There is a comment on this article. This standard applies to distribution networks for: a) medical gases or mixtures of medical gases, including: i) USP oxygen; ii) Oxygen 93 USP; (iii) medical air USP; (iv) nitrous oxide USP; (v) carbon dioxide USP; vi) USP helium; (vii) USP Oxygen/USP Nitrous Oxide Blends; (viii) USP helium/USP oxygen mixtures; and (ix) other medical gases; b) medical support gas, including: i) instrumentation air; and ii) medical nitrogen; c) medical aspiration; and d) anesthesia gas evacuation systems. 1.4 Exclusion of waste gas evacuation systems (SEEG) This standard does not contain any specific requirements relating to waste gas evacuation systems (SEEG) which are part of the general medical gas distribution pipeline network. Informative guidance is given on this subject in Annex R. 1.5 Exclusion of hyperbaric chambers This standard does not stipulate any particular requirements relating to hyperbaric chambers connected to medical gas distribution pipeline networks. See section 7.6.4 for the hyperbaric cutoff point. Note: Requirements for hyperbaric chambers are given in CSA Z275.1. 1.6 Exclusion of veterinary hospitals and animal research laboratories This standard does not apply to medical gas distribution networks of veterinary hospitals and animal research laboratories. Note: The relevant requirements of this standard, particularly those relating to safety, should be applied to the design, construction, installation and maintenance of distribution networks of veterinary hospitals and animal research laboratories. animals. These networks should be inspected and tested by regulatory bodies. 1.7 Terminology In this standard, the term “shall” indicates a requirement, that is to say a prescription that the user is obliged to respect to ensure compliance with the standard; “should” indicates a recommendation or what is advisable but not obligatory to do; and “may” indicates a possibility or what is permitted to be done. The notes that accompany the articles do not include prescriptions or recommendations. They are used to separate from the text explanations or information that are not properly part of the standard. Notes at the bottom of figures and tables are part of these and can be written as prescriptions. The annexes are qualified as normative (mandatory) or informative (optional) to clarify their application. 1.8 Units of measurement In this standard, values are expressed in SI (metric) units. Values in parentheses are for information purposes only. Unless otherwise noted, pressures and vacuums in this standard are expressed in gauge pressure (i.e., atmospheric pressure is 0).
