Scope
General This publication describes precautionary procedures to follow during the fueling of both fixed and portable equipment that uses liquid fuel@ such as portable boilers@ pumps@ air compressors@ bulldozers@ power shovels@ cranes@ pile drivers@ carryalls@ and forklift trucks@ as well as small portable gasoline-engine-driven devices@ such as chain saws@ lawn mowers@ and boats. The precautions contained in this publication are also applicable to fuel delivery to galley burners and boilers on small watercraft. Transporting such equipment to a service station or other central fueling location is usually impractical@ so the fuel must be brought to the equipment. Transportation of the fuel and its transfer to the equipment fuel tank must be done properly to avoid the risk of fire. This publication describes precautions to be taken to avoid fire when fuel is transported and transferred to the equipment mentioned above. The information presented in this publication represents consensus guidelines for fire prevention in such fueling operations; however@ this publication should not be regarded as a freestanding industry standard. Users of this publication should refer to applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards@ Department of Transportation regulations@ and applicable state and local regulations. Note: This publication applies only to the fueling of equipment that uses gasoline or diesel fuel. It does not apply to the fueling of equipment that uses liquefied petroleum gas. This publication does not cover the fueling of ships or barges or equipment at automotive service stations@ marinas@ or other fixed fueling locations.
