This document specifies the conceptual model for observations and the sampling elements involved in them. It provides an information exchange model for observation behavior and description of results within and between different scientific and technological groups. Observations typically involve sampling of features of ultimate interest. This document specifies a set of common sampling feature types classified primarily along topological dimensions and samples for use in ex situ observations. This pattern includes relationships between sampled elements (subsampling, derived sampling). This document only focuses on visible external interfaces and does not impose restrictions on internal implementation methods. This is different from interface specifications for actual environments.
