Scope
Introduction Over the last 15 years@ powertrains in the automotive industry have evolved from a few variants of internal combustion engines to an expansive range of technologies and architectures. The impetus for this diversification of powertrains is a combination of various factors@ including rising fuel economy and emission standards@ government funding and subsidies@ venture capital interest@ and advancements in various enabling technologies. Figure I.1 shows the major powertrain architectures in the automotive industry today. Among the powertrain types shown in Figure I.1@ full hybrids@ plug-in hybrids@ and electric vehicles are classified as electrified powertrain vehicles@ which are capable of being propelled purely by the electric motor. As a consequence@ the motor has a direct role in the performance of the vehicle and is a critical component of the powertrain. As a new product and technology for the automotive industry@ traction motors are a challenge and also an opportunity for original equipment manufacturers and suppliers. The objective of this study is to analyze electric motors from four different perspectives to understand the trends and future direction of the industry: megatrends@ technology@ manufacturing@ and supply chain. Each of the sections concludes with specific short- and long-term priorities and recommendations. The forecast and planning horizon considered for this book is the period of the next five years@ from 2014 to 2018. The study will be updated with new content and data every two years and is expected to be a comprehensive report and decision-making tool for the electric motor industry.
