Scope
The preliminary standard applies to the determination of the concentration of one or more of the following aliphatic hydrocarbons in workplace air using an adsorption tube filled with a suitable adsorbent that can be thermally desorbed: aliphatic CAS no. 1> hydrocarbons a. propane 74-98-6 b. n-butane 106-97-8 c. butene 106-98-9/590-18-1/624-64-6 d. isobutene 115-11-7 e. n-pentane 109-66-0 f. pentene 109-67-1/627-20-3/ 646-04-8/109-68-2 g. 1,3-butadiene 106-99-0 h. n-hexane 110-54-3 i. hexene 592-41-6/4050-45-7/ 592-43-8/13269-52-8 j. n-heptane 142-82-5 k. heptene 592-76-7/6443-92-1/ 14686-13-6/7642-10-6/ 14686-14-7 I. n-octane 111-65-9 mn-nonane 111-84-2 n. n-decan 124-18-5 o. n-undecan 1120-21-4 p. n-dodecane 112-40-3 q. n-tridecane 629-50-5 1) CAS No. = Chemistry al Abstracts Service Registry Number. The preliminary standard can be used for a concentration range from 0.2 to 1000 mg/m3 with a sample volume of 2.5 L and a sampling period of 15 minutes to 8 hours. For the limitations on the area of application, see also NVN 2948. Other components that have an equal or almost equal retention time in the gas chromatographic analysis as the substance(s) to be determined can interfere. The interference can be reduced by correct choice of column and setting of the gas chromatograph. The sampling method is suitable for both personal sampling and location-based sampling and provides an average concentration over a certain time (time-weighted average, TGG). For alternative determination methods for aliphatic hydrocarbons see NVN 2960, NVN 2962 and NVN 2963.
