The preliminary standard applies to the examination of both saltwater and freshwater fish and fishery products such as crustaceans and molluscs as well as frozen fish, fishmeal and smoked fish for the purpose of radioactivity measurements. This preliminary standard also applies to land snails. The samples can be used for various radioactivity measurements after possible sample preparation according to NVN 5644. The described method is suitable for accident situations, but can also be used for background monitoring. Note The contamination of fish occurs directly, by absorption from the water, or indirectly, via the food chain. Important nuclides are, for example, 134Cs, 137Cs, eoco and 210Po.
