Scope
The preliminary standard applies to the determination of the concentration of one or more of the following ketones in workplace air using an adsorption tube filled with a suitable adsorbent that can be thermally desorbed: ketones (synonyms) CAS no. . 1> a. 2-propanone (acetone, dimethyl ketone) b. methyl ethyl ketone (MEK, 2-butanone, ethyl methyl ketone) c. cyclohexanone d. methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK, hexon, isobutyl methyl ketone, 4-methyl-2-pentanone) e. o-methylcyclohexanone f. 3,5,5-trimethylclohex-2-enone (isophorone, isoacetophorone) g. 3-heptanone (ethyl butyl ketone) 67-64-1 78-93-3 108-94-1 108-10-1 583-60-8 78-59-1 106-35-4 1) CAS No. = Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number. The preliminary standard can be used for a concentration range from 0.2 to 100 mg/m3 with a sample volume of 2.5 L and a sampling period of 15 minutes to 8 hours. For the limitations on the area of application, see also NVN 2948. Other components that have an equal or almost equal retention time in the gas chromatographic analysis as the substance(s) to be determined can interfere. The interference can be reduced by correct choice of column and setting of the gas chromatograph. The sampling method is suitable for both personal sampling and location-based sampling and provides a specific time-average concentration (time-weighted average, TGG). For alternative determination methods for ketones, see NVN 2967.
