Scope
The preliminary standard applies to the determination of the concentration of one or more of the following ketones in workplace air using an adsorption tube filled with activated carbon as an adsorbent: ketones (synonyms) group 1 CAS no. 1> a. 2-propanone (acetone, dimethyl ketone) b. methyl propyl ketone (2-pentanone, ethyl acetone) c. cyclohexanone d. methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK, hexon, isobutyl methyl ketone, 4-methyl-2-pentanone) e. methyl butyl ketone (MBK, 2-hexanone, methyl n-butyl ketone) f. diisobutyl ketone (2,6-dimethyl-4-heptanone) 67-64-1 108-87-9 108-94-1 108-10-1 591-78-6 108-83-8 group II g. mesityl oxide (methyl isobutenyl ketone, 4-methyl-3-penten-2-one) h. 2-heptanone (methyl - (n-amyl) - ketone) i. 3-heptanone (ethyl butyl ketone) j. 5-methyl-3-heptanone (ethyl amyl ketone, EAK, amyl ethyl ketone) k. 2-camphanone (camphor, 1,7,7-trimethylbicyclo (2,2,1) heptanone-2) 141-79-7 110-43-0 106-35-4 541-85-5 76-22- 2 1) CAS no. = Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number. The preliminary standard can be used for a concentration range from 10 to 1000 mg/m3 with a sample volume of 101 and a sampling period of 15 m to 8 hours, with the exception of acetone. For acetone, the concentration range is from 40 to 4000 mg/m3 with a sample volume of 2.5 L and a sampling time of 15 minutes to 8 hours. For the limitations on the area of application, see also NVN 2947. Other components that have an equal or almost equal retention time in the gas chromatographic analysis as the substance(s) to be determined can interfere. The interference can be reduced by correct choice of column and setting of the gas chromatograph. The sampling method is suitable for both personal sampling and location-based sampling and provides an average concentration over a certain time (time-weighted average, TGG). For an alternative determination method for ketones, see NVN 2968.
