Scope
This standard describes safety measures to prevent fire and explosion accidents when hot work is performed on tank bottoms. As used in this standard, the term "hot work" is defined as an operation that produces a spark or flame hot enough to ignite flammable gases. Tanks containing flammable and combustible liquids, regardless of age or type of construction, shall be considered unsafe for hot work until safety inspections have been carried out to demonstrate their safety. These inspections include gas testing to determine whether the oxygen content in each tank is between 19.5% and 22.5%. Hot work on tank bottoms requires special techniques to prevent flammable gases lurking at the bottom of the tank from igniting. Although every tank bottom repair must be carefully considered, the safety measures described in this standard provide various methods for preparing tank bottoms for hot work. These measures apply to most situations.
