Scope
The purpose of this standard is to provide a sound method for the analysis, design or evaluation of mooring systems for use with floating units. This approach provides a unified analysis tool. Through this tool, the suitability and safety of a mooring system can be determined by understanding the environmental conditions in a specific area, the characteristics of the device in the mooring state and other factors. This standard also includes some design guidelines for dynamic positioning systems. Floating unit mooring technology is developing rapidly. Clear, specific and detailed recommendations are made in areas where the Committee believes that sufficient data are available. In other areas, only general statements that should be considered address specific issues. Designers should be encouraged to make use of all research findings. As marine technology continues to evolve, this recommended practice will be revised and it is expected that the general statements contained here will gradually be replaced by detailed recommendations.
