Scope
1.1 This standard applies to all flammable and combustible liquids, including waste liquids. Exceptions include liquids, liquefied gases or cryogenic liquids with a freezing point greater than or equal to 37.8°C (100°F). 1.2 For various common flammable and combustible liquids, their safe storage and use requirements mainly depend on the combustion characteristics of the liquid, especially the flash point, which is used as the basis for liquid classification (see Chapter 3). It should be noted that the grade of liquid will vary due to mixing. For example. Put Class II liquid into the storage tank that has been filled with Class I liquid. The contact of Class II liquid with the vapor of Class I liquid through the connecting pipeline will change the grade of Class II liquid (see 5.3.7.4 and 5.4.5.6). In this case, care should be taken to apply requirements appropriate to the actual grade. (NFPA 325M contains flash point and other fire hazard data. NFPA 49 and NFPA 321 also contain relevant information). 1.3 Liquid volatility increases with heating. When Class II or Class III liquids are naturally or artificially heated to temperatures above their flash point or above under storage conditions, usage conditions or process operating conditions, additional requirements are required. These requirements include considerations such as ventilation, distance from fire sources, fire barriers, and electrical hazardous area ratings. 1.4 When the liquid has unusual combustion characteristics. If it is prone to spontaneous combustion in the air, reacts violently with other substances, is prone to explosive decomposition, or has other characteristics that require higher protection than normal liquids with similar flash point classifications, additional safe storage and use requirements must be put forward.
