Scope
This standard describes various instruments for measuring frequency-weighted and time-averaged sound pressure levels. There is also an option to measure sound exposure levels. This standard complies with the requirements of the IEC 651 standard "Sound level meter", but specifies necessary additional characteristics for the measurement of steady, intermittent, fluctuating and pulsed equivalent continuous sound pressure levels Leq. Note: The standardization of instruments used to measure equivalent continuous sound pressure levels and sound exposure levels does not mean that these quantities fully characterize the psychological and physiological effects of sound on people. Although complete integrating sound level meters are specified, a general sound level meter conforming to IEC 651 is permitted if the complete system combined with an auxiliary component or plug-in providing an averaging function meets the requirements of this standard. . This instrument is called an "integrated average sound level meter", which may also be referred to as an "integrated sound level meter" or "average sound level meter". "Integrating sound level meter" is used in this standard. The time-averaged characteristics of the integrating sound level meter are significantly different from those of general sound level meters. See Appendix A for details.
