Graphs enable the buckling stress to be predicted of the cylinders when subjected to torsion alone. All cylinder lengths are covered@ from infinitely long@ through cylinders whose buckling is affected by their length but not by the end conditions@ down to short cylinders where both length and end conditions influence buckling. The transitions between the three cases were established by a statistical analysis of the results of 168 tests extracted from the literature. The effect of internal or external pressure on buckling is treated@ as is the influence of material plasticity. The data also relate to ring-stiffened cylinders@ the cylinder length then being the ring spacing. A practical worked example illustrates the use of the information.
