- This standard specifies the determination of acids and alkalis in petroleum products and lubricating oils dissolved in a mixed solution of toluene and isopropyl alcohol. This method is suitable for acids and bases with dissociation constants ( ) greater than 10-9, but weak acids and weak bases have dissociation constants less than 10-9 and will not interfere with the determination. Salts whose hydrolysis constant is greater than 10-9 are not suitable for this determination method. This measurement method expresses the relative changes in oils when they are oxidized, although
