The Unified Numbering System (UNS) provides a unified numbering system for metallic materials, aiming to harmonize various international numbering systems managed by technical associations, trade associations, and other users and producers of metals and alloys. This system avoids the confusion of using multiple numbers to identify the same metal or alloy, and the same number being assigned to two or more different metals or alloys. It provides the uniformity required for efficient indexing, record keeping, data storage and retrieval, and cross-referencing. The UNS designation itself is not a specification, as it does not define requirements for delivery conditions such as mechanical property requirements, melt analysis tolerances, heat treatment, packaging, marking, and inspection. It is a unified numbering system for identifying metals or alloys, and its control limits have been separately published by technical associations and designated bodies such as the Aluminum Institute, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), ASTM International, SAE International, NACE International, the American Welding Society (AWS), the Copper Development Association (CDA), and ISO. This publication provides unified designations for more than 14,000 metals and alloys, including aluminum and aluminum alloys, copper and copper alloys, steel, nickel and nickel alloys, precious metals, reactive metals and refractory metals.
