The 2023 revision of the AMS4413C standard includes five major changes: the maximum product thickness is expanded to 8 inches (203.2 mm), the SI unit elongation values are aligned with the AMS Editorial Guide, the SL fracture toughness requirement for the 12.5-38.2 mm thickness range is removed, a prohibition clause for unauthorized exceptions is added, and the standard structure is optimized. These changes reflect the growing demand for large-scale components made of 2050-T84 aluminum alloy in the aerospace industry.
| Element | Minimum value (%) | Maximum value (%) | Function and effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copper (Cu) | 3.2 | 3.9 | Improve strength and age hardening effect |
| Lithium (Li) | 0.7 | 1.3 | Reduce density and increase elastic modulus |
| Silver (Ag) | 0.2 | 0.7 | Optimized precipitate distribution |
The alloy achieves its optimal performance combination through a 3.5% permanent tensile strain and T84 aging treatment. The heat treatment process parameters are proprietary to the manufacturer.
Typical Application Case: The wing ribs of a commercial aircraft use 4.5-inch (114mm) thick 2050-T84 plate. The measured longitudinal properties of the plate achieved: a tensile strength of 503MPa, a yield strength of 455MPa, an elongation of 7%, and a KIc fracture toughness value of 34MPa√m, fully meeting the requirements of the primary load-bearing structure.
The standard specifies mechanical properties that must be met in different thickness ranges. The short transverse yield strength of 8-inch thick plates remains ≥400MPa, demonstrating excellent isotropy.
Special attention should be paid during procurement: For plates outside the standard thickness range (0.5-8 inches), special performance requirements must be clearly stated in the order. If fracture toughness testing is required, the specimen orientation (LT/TL/SL) must be specified. It is recommended to establish a material database to record the measured performance data of each batch, especially the performance degradation in the center area of thick plates.
