Standard Evolution and Technical Background

AMS4078L, SAE International's latest revised aerospace material specification for 2023, continues the technical framework first published in 1967.

2. Mechanical Properties

Typical Application Case: When a certain aircraft wing spar uses 7075-T7351 plate (2.5 inches thick):

  • Tensile Strength ≥66 ksi (455 MPa)
  • Thick Plate Solution Treatment+2% Elongation+T7351 Aging ANSI H35.1

    2. Corrosion Protection Requirements

    Achieve stress corrosion protection through the correlation control of electrical conductivity and mechanical properties:

    • Class A: Conductivity ≥40% IACS (23.2 MS/m)
    • Class B: When the conductivity is 38-39.9% IACS, the yield strength does not exceed the standard lower limit of 11.9ksi
    • Conductivity <38% IACS will be directly scrapped

    2. Special Situation Handling

    Products outside the standard range must be marked with the AMS4078L(EXC) logo and clearly stated in the test report:

    1. Dimensions outside the range of Clause 1.1
    2. Any exceptions to the technical requirements in Chapter 3
    3. Parameters specifically approved by the purchaser

    Implementation Recommendations

    1. Procurement Technical Requirements

    According to Clause 8.6, the procurement documents shall at least include:

    • Standard number AMS4078L and revision status
    • Precise dimensional requirements for plates/sheets
    • Special performance indicators when outside the standard range
    • Ultrasonic testing level requirements (if applicable)

    2. Supply Chain Management

    The new regulations require that within 18 months of publication (until May 2025):

    • The procurement/production/distribution of metal raw materials must comply with the AS6279 standard
    • Establish a traceable raw material batch management system
    • Unauthorized technical exceptions are prohibited
