Scope
1.1 Scope. 1.1.1 This standard covers the minimum requirements for the installation of standpipe and hose systems. 1.1.2* This standard does not include specific requirements for periodic inspection, testing, and maintenance of these systems. 1.2 Purpose. 1.2.1 This standard is intended to provide reasonable protection of life and property against fire through installation requirements based on sound engineering principles, test data, and practical experience. 1.2.2 Standpipe and hose systems are specialized fire protection systems and should be designed, installed, and tested by qualified personnel. 1.2.3 This standard is not intended to restrict new technologies or alternative arrangements, provided that the level of safety is not less than that specified in the standard. 1.3 Applicability. This standard reflects the consensus opinion required to provide an acceptable level of protection at the time of publication. 1.3.1 Unless otherwise specified, the provisions of this standard do not apply to facilities, equipment, structures, or installations that existed prior to the effective date of the standard. 1.3.2 In certain circumstances, the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) may decide that an existing situation poses an unacceptable risk and permit retroactive application under this standard. 1.3.3 Retroactive modifications to the requirements of this standard are permitted provided that such modifications do not significantly reduce safety.
