Introduction

Interpretation of the core content of the standard

As an international authoritative standard in the field of weather balloons, ISO 17717:2024 puts forward systematic technical requirements for weather balloons made of natural rubber latex or composite synthetic rubber latex. The standard applies to two types of products: impregnation process (Type 1) and molding process (Type 2). Compared with the 2017 version, the new version mainly adds 10-100 specification parameters and optimizes the testing requirements.

Standard Evolution Analysis

The 2024 version of the standard has mainly made four technical revisions:

  1. Added parameters such as size, mass, and burst diameter for specifications 10-100
  2. Adjusted the mass range to the specification range (Table 8)
  3. Added Precision cutting cotton gloves without palm coating
  4. to the requirements for inspection gloves
  5. Specify that the sample size for burst test shall be determined by segment according to the specification

Implementation suggestions

Production process control

  • Strictly distinguish between Type 1 and Type 2 process routes. For products with molded process, special control shall be given to the neck thickness (1.1±0.5mm)
  • Adopt the weighing classification method in Appendix C: For specifications below 300, use a ±0.5g precision balance

Key points for quality inspection

  • Appearance inspection shall be carried out in the inflated state (Appendix B). Type 1 specification 300 balloons shall reach an inflated diameter of ≥3.5m
  • Ozone aging test shall maintain an elongation of 500% (Appendix F.4.4)

Transportation and storage specifications

  • Storage temperature must be controlled at 10-30℃, relative humidity ≤70%
  • The distance between the shelf and the ground must be ≥0.2m, and stacked products must be turned over every 3 months
  • Packaging must be lined with moisture-proof paper (Clause 6.1.2)
