Scope

This part specifies the safety requirements for the design and manufacture of new machines and equipment used in pre-press, printing presses, binding and finishing systems, paper processing systems, and in stand-alone flatbed printing presses. ISO 12643-1 applies to stand-alone machines and equipment combined with other machines, including equipment where all machine operating parts (e.g., drives) are controlled by the same control system. The requirements specified in this part apply to equipment that falls within the scope of all parts of ISO 12643, unless otherwise stated. This part is intended to be used in conjunction with other relevant parts of ISO 12643, which contain additional requirements for specific equipment types. This part addresses significant hazards in equipment and systems in the following areas: mechanical hazards, electrical hazards, hazards of slipping, tripping and falling; ergonomic hazards; noise hazards; ultraviolet and laser radiation hazards; fire and explosion hazards; thermal hazards; hazards of processed substances and materials; hazards of control and malfunction failures; and other types of emission hazards (e.g., ozone, haze, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), etc.). This standard does not apply to: post-processing paper cutters (roll cutters); office layout machines equipped with friction feeders; mail processing machines; packaging filling machines (e.g., machines for forming, filling, and sealing packages); and textile printing presses. The safety principles specified in this part also apply to the design of equipment in other technical fields not covered by ISO 12643.
