DIN 60500-4:2024 specifies a standardized method for determining the vertical plane permeability of geotextiles and related products under conditions of constant hydraulic pressure differential. This standard replaces the 2007 edition and primarily updates the test equipment specifications, sample pretreatment procedures, and reporting requirements.

Test equipment technical specifications

The penetration tester must meet the following requirements:

  • Cylindrical test chamber with inner diameter ≥130mm
  • Perforated plate with porosity ≥40% (pore size 5-10mm)
  • Height-adjustable water level control system
  • ±0.1mm head difference measurement accuracy

Case: For open-cell geogrids, a thickness-dependent test mode is required, and the thickness values under various stresses are pre-determined using DIN EN ISO 9863-1.


Key points of sample processing

  1. After sampling, soak in water containing 0.1% non-ionic surfactant for ≥12 hours
  2. Degassing at 80Pa negative pressure for 15 minutes
  3. The total thickness of multi-layer specimens is recommended to be controlled between 2-4cm (under 2kPa)

Data processing formula

Calculation formula for permeability coefficient after water temperature correction:

kn = (Q×dn×RT20) / (A×n×Δh)

Where RT20 is the water temperature correction coefficient: 1.762 + 0.0337T + 0.00022T2


Recommendations for standard implementation

  • For hydraulic gradients of i>2, laminar flow conditions must be verified.
  • The report should include perforated plate technical parameters (porosity/pore size distribution).
  • It is recommended to use a three-layer specimen to improve the testing accuracy of thin materials.
